Dev Update – SplinterMites on the plains

Hello again!

You may recall a couple of weeks ago we showed you the SplinterMite enemy model.

Tonight, it is our pleasure to show you some (very rough) footage in-game of the little critters scampering around in the desert without a care in the world.

As we have said before, please be aware that this is pre-alpha footage and all assets, animation, and behaviour is work-in-progress and is subject to change. In the video below, we must stress that there is no AI at work here, and we’re currently working to get their sneaky, predatory behaviour working in our environments. There are some really cool things we’re planning on doing with them.

Our environment artists and level designers are moving forward in leaps and bounds with the persistent map, and it’s becoming populated with some great looking foliage and other assets to enhance your exploring, destroying, hunting, and being hunted.

Two weeks ago we were at EGX Rezzed in Birmingham, where we had a great time meeting gamers, fellow Indie Developers and Games Industry veterans. We showed off the Pre-Alpha Demo, and talked about how Eden Star is evolving. You can see a great interviews with John and Kyle below!

Thanks to everyone both public and press who talked to us, and we look forward to delivering more news to you soon!

Dev Update – SplinterMites…

Hello again from the quaint countryside offices of Flix!

We’re currently showing the pre-alpha demo at EGX Rezzed in Birmingham, and will be until Sunday, so if you’re in the area, why not come over for a look, and chat with some of the devs! It’s a great event, and we’re all very impressed at the quality and creativity of the other Indie games on display. There’s a huge variety of cool ideas, so we encourage everyone who can to check them out in this vibrant showroom setting! It’s an experience you can’t really recreate at home.

The SplinterMite

You may remember this post from a while ago when we revealed the concept art for our first ground-based enemy, the SplinterMite. Since then, we’ve been doing a lot of other work on the game, but we certainly haven’t neglected our ugly little friend! The model and textures have been polished up to final game level, and the animations have been developed ready for the AI to be implemented. Right now, they’ve barely got any AI controlling them, but it’s great fun to see them running around the level, and even more fun to blast them and throw them around the landscape!

We’ll be revealing footage of the SpliterMite in-world and scurrying around soon, so stay tuned for more!

The SplinterMite will be able to burrow into the soft earth, and tunnel undetected, unless you force them to surface again. Your structures will be built on sturdy foundations, which the Splintermite cannot burrow through, so the design of your base will help protect yourself from these pack-hunters!

Though SplinterMites are small (about the size of a Labrador, if a Labrador had chitinous armour plates, stabbing blades for legs, and a powerful beak ), they tend to be found moving in packs, and can have unpredictable aggressive behavior.

Stay tuned for further news!

indie db of the year 2013

Friday updates are reserved for the tastiest tidbits of Eden Star news, and to kick it off, we’re revealing the first of our ground-based enemies: The Splintermite.

The Splintermite is a reclusive creature, preferring to stay in the shadows, away from the other dangerous predators on Pharus 7.

Since humankind’s first remote observation of these creatures, their behaviour has changed dramatically. Although the Splintermite is one of the smaller indigenous predators on Pharus 7, they are aggressively territorial and will actively hunt down Pioneers, detonating themselves when close to their target.

The explosive reaction is caused by a volatile mix of crystals and bile that is biologically secreted beneath the creature’s dorsal carapace. Samples from a live specimen have yet to be obtained for study.

This is the second alien creature we have revealed so far, but expect to see more in the near future! More diversity means more challenging combat for players, more tactical gameplay, and a more interesting world to explore!

We’d love to hear your thoughts in the forums! We’ll be back next week with another development news roundup, and more glimpses into the world of Eden Star!

See you then!
